They say everyone who looks into their family history will find a secret sooner or later. For my family, it was no different. Only, what I expected to be some dark past about hiding bodies or having different baby daddies ended up being not even close to the reality. No, the big secret in my family was that we come from a lineage of demon hunters tied to an ancient creed from the early traditions of Jewish assassins, the Sicarii.
I never asked for any of this information, it only came to light after a chance encounter with a...9th level demon? Yeah, I think it was 9th. I haven't been told how many levels there are yet, but nine sounds pretty high to me. It all started when I saw a young girl walking down the street, alone, right at dusk. I only meant to ask if she was okay and needed help to find her way home. When she turned to look at me, I saw her eyes flicker, then slant. It was like my very presence activated something in her.
She launched at me and tackled me to the ground with a strength I didn't even know was possible. I had to fight my way back to my feet, and even then she began to bite at my ankles. I screamed, I was angry, but it happened. I yelled back, and some unknown language revealed itself. The...thing...was shocked, and furious.
It turned into a frenzy and punched its fists into the pavement, shattering the concrete. I could feel a rising deep in my chest of something I wouldn't understand. Within a moment I collapsed to my knees and screamed. A blinding white light filled my vision and I was passed out cold.
When I woke up, I was on the couch of my mother's house. I could hear the tinkling sound of a spoon swirling in a teacup. I wiped my eyes to clear the disorientation in my vision. My head was pounding and I could feel my stomach flipping over on itself.
“Well, it's about time,” my mother said I'm her soft but reassuring voice.
“There was a girl…” I started.
“The girls alright. That thing that was living inside of her, on the other hand, was obliterated…by you,” she said as she smiled brightly.
“What the heck was that? What happened to me?!” I shouted. Mom didn't flinch, she simply handed me the cup.
“It was a demon, a very high-leveled one. Normally you would have been turned to dust, but since you happened to awaken right then the event handled itself. Next time won't be so easy.”
“Next time? What is happening right now? I don't understand…” I exclaimed.
“You are part of the Sicarii, an ancient order of Jewish assassins. Well, there was a subsection dedicated to destroying the creature of Sheol. You're a part of the bloodline, and you have a duty that is quite literally inescapable. Before we get into all of this there is one rule that you absolutely, under no circumstances, break,” she explained as she paced back and forth.
“What?” I asked.
“You can't tell your father,” she responded.
